About Fredrick Sykes

Fredrick Sykes is a longtime public servant, community leader, and 40-year resident of West Covina whose life has been defined by service, responsibility, and a deep commitment to the community he calls home.

Born in Pineville, Louisiana, and raised in and around South Central Los Angeles, Fredrick learned early the values of hard work, discipline, and perseverance. Those formative experiences shaped his belief in personal responsibility and the importance of strong, safe, and supportive communities.

Fredrick built a career in public safety as a Los Angeles County Deputy Sheriff, where he dedicated himself to protecting lives and serving the public. His years in law enforcement gave him firsthand experience responding to emergencies, preventing crime, and working closely with residents during some of their most difficult moments. That service also reinforced his belief that effective public safety depends on trust, communication, and strong relationships between law enforcement and the communities they serve.

After retiring from the Sheriff’s Department, Fredrick continued his commitment to public service through local government. He was elected to the West Covina City Council and later served as Mayor, where he helped guide the city through important decisions affecting public safety, city services, development, and fiscal responsibility. His time in elected office gave him a deep understanding of how local government works and the importance of making decisions that reflect the needs and priorities of residents.

In addition to his elected service, Fredrick has served in a variety of appointed roles, including Planning Commissioner, Human Relations Commissioner, and member of the Redevelopment Dissolution Oversight Board. In these positions, he worked on issues ranging from land use and community development to civic engagement and government accountability. He has also been appointed to represent the First Supervisorial District on a regional commission, bringing local concerns to broader policy discussions.

Throughout his public life, Fredrick has remained active in the West Covina community. He has supported organizations such as the West Covina Lions Club, West Covina Historical Society, and West Covina Beautiful, and has long been involved in efforts to preserve the city’s history, improve neighborhoods, and strengthen civic pride. He believes that leadership does not end at City Hall, but continues through everyday involvement in the community.

Fredrick and his wife, Dana, have been married for 35 years and have built their life in West Covina. Together, they have raised a family rooted in the values of service, education, and opportunity. Fredrick is also a proud grandfather, and his family remains the center of his life and his motivation to continue serving future generations.

Today, Fredrick Sykes remains focused on the same principles that have guided his entire life: public safety, honest government, strong neighborhoods, and leadership that listens to the people it serves.
